To many film critics or people with good movie taste, Disney’s 1992 musical about an 1899 New York City newsboy strike Newsies was a bust. But to anyone who was an 8-year-old girl the first time she saw it and had pretty much zero standards for film finesse, it became an obsession. My friends and I memorized all the songs, dreamed of doing the dances, and broke at least one Newsies VHS from over-use. Today, there are lots of girls in my generation who love this movie for the same reason of sentimentality that people in my generation love Goonies or The Sand Lot. These movies were awesome to us when we were younger, so even watching them now, we are under their spell.

Salvador Dalí + Walt Disney = BFF
"Text me later, K?"
Did you know that Spanish painter Salvador Dalí and Walt Disney were pals? 66 years ago, they hatched a plan for a six-minute short. They had trouble funding it, so put it to a halt. But in 1999, Roy stumbled upon the project while working on Fantasia 2000 and decided to get it going again.
Destino tells the love story of Chronos and the problem he has when he falls for a mortal female. She dances through surreal scenery that looks like Dalí’s paintings. There aren’t any words, but the soundtrack is a single song by Mexican composer Armando Dominguez, and goddam is it a gorgeous tune.

There is this one episode of Leave it to Beaver where Beaver tries out for the band but doesn’t make the cut. Not wanting to devastate his proud parents, he lies to them and loiters around town after school every day to make it seem like he’s at practice. And when it’s time for the final recital, Ward and June are psyched.
On the night of the concert, they’re getting ready, Beaver is wearing a tux, and Wally, who knows what’s going on, is all like, “Beaver what the hell are you going to do when Mom and Dad go to the concert and you aren’t in it?” And Beaver says:
“I’m just gonna hope something happens.” [laugh track]
